Press Conference - Abdelrazik responds to UN decision

Press Conference on UN response to Abousfian Abdelrazik's request to be removed from blacklist

Thursday, 1 December 2011, 10am

Centre St. Pierre, 1212 Panet, room 304, Montreal

Media brief (summary of key issues)

The UN announced today a decision on Montrealer Abousfian Abdelrazik's request to be removed from its international blacklist. Mr. Abdelrazik has been waiting for the decision since he applied to be delisted, on January 25, 2011.

Mr. Abdelrazik, currently a full-time father, was placed on the blacklist in 2006, while he was still living in forced exile in Sudan. After his case erupted into a major scandal for the Conservative government, he was brought back to Canada, but has remained on the blacklist ever since.

People on the "1267 List" are subject to an asset freeze and an international travel ban - a situation Mr. Abdelrazik describes as living in a "prison without walls". Little is known about how people end up on the list and, once on, it is almost impossible to get off.

Speakers:
Abousfian Abdelrazik
member of Project Fly Home
Khaled Elgazzar and Paul Champ, lawyers for Mr. Abdelrazik
Philippe Robert de Massy, Ligue des droits et libertés
Sameer Zuberi, Canadian Muslim Forum
Hassan Yussuf, Secretary-Treasurer, Canadian Labour Congress (by telephone)
Manon Perron, CSN-CCMM
