Abousfian Abdelrazik and Project Fly Home repudiate the baseless attack on Mr. Abdelrazik's reputation made by Radio Canada and the Montreal newspaper La Presse on 8 May 2013. We demand an immediate apology from the officials responsible for creating these defamatory allegations, from those hiding in the shadows who handed the lies to a servile media, and from the irresponsible journalists all too ready to trade in scandal - however removed from reality and however unverified - to make their names at the expense of truth and other people's lives.
Does it need to be said? Mr. Abdelrazik was not involved in plotting any violence against fellow community members in Montreal (or anywhere else) in 2002 (or any other year). The allegations are absurd, nonsensical, bizarre; nothing less than laughable for those who know Mr. Abdelrazik.
In 2003, Mr. Abdelrazik was arrested without charge and tortured by Sudan on Canada's request; CSIS agents travelled to Sudan to question him in Sudanese detention. He was then blocked from returning home to Montreal for six years and added to a UN blacklist which imposed serious sanctions on him.
The government of Canada has never charged Mr. Abdelrazik with any crime. The UN Security Council removed him from its blacklist in 2011. In 2007, both the RCMP and CSIS stated that they had no information against Mr. Abdelrazik.
How is it that years after he has been cleared by both Canadian security agencies and the UN Security Council, and 11 years after this exchange is supposed to have taken place, Mr. Abdelrazik once more finds his name in the media associated with horrible and entirely unsubstantiated allegations he has never heard before?
Mr. Abdelrazik and his legal counsel are considering strategies for ensuring that this situation does not repeat itself again and that those who are responsible are held to account.
